Varactors

Variable capacitors, or varactors, are versatile components. Phiar varactors can be applied to antenna arrays to vary phase delays and could potentially be used as high frequency RF sources.

These varactors have a structure similar to our MIIM diodes, but feature different material systems and geometries. An explanation of how our varactors work is here.

These devices provide the same performance and practicality benefits over semiconductor devices that the metal-double-insulator diode and transistor do. We have built and measured MIIM varactors, as seen in Figure 1.

As a proof of concept, Phiar has built several varactors. Note the ~10% change in capacitance over a 0.5 volt bias change.
